What is Upscaling?

Video upscaling is the process of increasing a video's resolution beyond its original capture resolution using interpolation or AI super-resolution models.

Upscaling Explained

Traditional upscaling uses mathematical interpolation (bilinear, bicubic, Lanczos) to estimate new pixels between existing ones, resulting in soft or blurry output. AI upscaling (super-resolution) uses neural networks trained on pairs of low and high resolution content to intelligently reconstruct detail, producing significantly sharper results. AI upscaling can increase resolution by 2x or 4x while adding plausible detail that was not in the original. This is valuable for repurposing older content, upscaling AI-generated video (which is often 720p), and preparing low-resolution source material for high-resolution display. The trade-off is processing time and occasional artifacts.
