A video timeline is the linear, time-based interface in a video editor where clips, audio tracks, graphics, and effects are arranged in sequence to compose the final video.

The timeline is the central workspace of any non-linear video editor (NLE). Clips are placed on horizontal tracks representing time, with video tracks stacked above audio tracks. Multiple video tracks allow layering: a base footage track, a B-roll overlay track, a graphics track, and a caption track can all be active simultaneously, composited together in the final render. The timeline enables precise trimming, rearranging, and synchronization of all media elements. Markers and chapter points on the timeline help organize long-form projects. In AI-powered video creation workflows, the timeline may be generated programmatically rather than manually assembled, with AI tools populating tracks with generated clips, voiceover, and captions based on a script.
