Green screen (also called a chroma key background) is a standard technique in film, television, and online video production for placing subjects in synthetic environments without physical location shooting. The solid green color (chosen because it is rarely present in human skin tones) is digitally removed in post-production and replaced with any desired background. Green is the preferred color for most video because digital cameras capture green channel information at the highest resolution; blue screen is used as an alternative when the subject's wardrobe includes green elements. Proper green screen technique requires even lighting of the backdrop (to avoid color variance that causes incomplete keying), separation between subject and backdrop (to reduce green spill), and high-resolution capture. Consumer virtual backgrounds in video conferencing apps use AI-based background removal rather than chroma key, eliminating the need for physical green screen setup.
