What is Chroma Key?

Chroma key is the technical process underlying green screen and blue screen effects. The software samples the key color from the background, creates a mask of pixels matching that color within a tolerance range, and makes those pixels transparent so a background layer shows through. Quality chroma keying requires careful tolerance tuning: too narrow and keying is incomplete (leaving green fringe), too wide and it removes similar colors from the subject. Advanced chroma key processors use spill suppression to handle color contamination on the subject's edges and hair. Modern AI-powered background removal tools perform similar compositing without requiring a physical green screen at all, using machine learning segmentation to separate subjects from arbitrary backgrounds. This has made green screen less essential for online creators while remaining standard in broadcast production.
