What is 4K Video?

4K video is a resolution standard of approximately 4000 horizontal pixels, most commonly 3840x2160 (4K UHD), offering four times the detail of standard 1080p Full HD.

4K has become the standard for professional video production, with most modern cameras, phones, and displays supporting it. For social media, 4K source footage is valuable because it provides room for cropping (reframing from 16:9 to 9:16 without quality loss) and future-proofing content. However, most social platforms compress uploaded video significantly, so the difference between uploading 1080p and 4K is minimal for the viewer. Where 4K matters most is in production: shooting in 4K allows digital zoom, stabilization cropping, and reframing without dropping below 1080p delivery resolution.
